Black-and-white Fine Art Portraiture for Seniors Living in Retirement and Independent-Living Communities
What is Senior Portrait Day?
A relaxed, professional portrait experience hosted at your community with scheduled sessions, simple logistics, high participation and extremely high satisfaction.

A one or two -day event for the 55+ crowd. It's structured a little differently from my regular offerings but the quality remains the same. I’m a family photographer who focuses on the end of the spectrum who is usually forgotten. The ones whom I find the most interesting.
Photographs are kept simple. Headshot-lite, with a focus on personality over posing. Background are plain black. A simple setting means the person(s) in the picture aren't competing for attention with the background.
I earned my photography degree on film and I photograph in black-and-white. Don't be surprised if this resonates with your community, especially the men. (Hopefully I'll get their approval!)

Why Portraits Matter
I ran a similar portrait event with The Span Center/YMCA Friendship Café, during my time volunteering there, and the response was very strong. The experience, for my subjects and me, was unforgettable.
The participants signed up reluctantly, convinced they weren't photogenic, or that being photographed at this stage of life is something you endure—not something you could enjoy. Showing them the back of my camera helped, but still didn't convince them until the following week.
The next week I presented the finished images as a slideshow on a large screen. It was instant pandemonium! They wanted to see everyone’s portraits, and their own at the same time. It wasn’t vanity; it was the thrill of being photographed with intention—an actual professional portrait, not a quick, unflattering phone snapshot. I made them look good, something not a single one of them believed possible.
Older adults are often photographed casually, often at major events (featuring someone else in the spotlight), and never with real intention. When someone is well-lit, guided gently, and given patient attention, it is deeply affirming.
The participants were genuinely moved to see that they could look great and fully themselves on camera—even though they'd just come from an exercise class and most were wearing their program t-shirts. I didn't remove wrinkles or age in Photoshop. I didn't change who they are (because I truly believe they're perfectly fine as they are).
Being seen is one of the main reasons I do this work, and it’s the outcome I aim to bring into a community setting. To see the person in front of my camera. I don't find it difficult to accomplish: it's the result of giving focused attention to those who feel unseen.
What Senior Portrait Day Looks Like
A Portrait Day is a one-day, on-site portrait studio with scheduled time slots. My business is based on offering mobile portrait services and this is exactly that.
Cost
Senior Portrait Days are offered at $250 per session (not per person). Couples, best friends, or adult children are welcome to be photographed, and the session fee remains the same. This is a modified version of my Signature Portrait Session.
Sessions can be gifted, particularly if adult children wish to gift their parents. Anyone who wants to gift a session should contact me ASAP so that I can create a beautiful gift voucher for the recipient. There are no additional fees for gifting a session.
What Each Session Includes:
- A professionally-guided portrait session with comfortable pacing
- Immediate digital proofing after the session
- One final image of their choosing
- Additional images: $50 per image
- Professional retouching on all selected image(s)
- Two delivered digital files of selected image(s): one optimized for printing (with a print release), one optimized for online sharing
- A full set of 5×7 photographic proof prints of their session
- Preferential event portrait rate of $250 per portrait session (not per person)
- All printed items at lab cost, no markup (details below)
- Informational PDF styling/posing guide for download, with space to write so good ideas aren't forgotten
I use studio lighting, which means not relying on natural light. This opens scheduling possibilities and potential photoshoot locations (though I need electricity).
Model Release Information
Senior Portrait Day is offered at a special portfolio-building event rate. Participation requires signing a Portrait Contract that includes a standard Model Release (allowing selected images to be used in my online portfolio, all marketing channels, and as printed studio samples).
If a participant prefers not to sign a Model Release, this event is not for them. They should schedule an individual private session at my regular rates, and a later date. Privacy Clauses are allowed for any non-portfolio-building session.
The Portrait Contract can be reviewed upon request at any time. It's a standard portrait-photographer contract.
Who can be included in a portrait session
This is designed for individual participants, but they're welcome to have portraits made with other loved ones:
- A spouse/partner/friend is welcome to join
- Pets are welcome by request (a short info sheet is available for that decision)
- Adult children for Grandparent/Generational Portraits are welcome by request
If additional participants are planned, it’s best noted at sign-up. There are no extra fees, but pre-planning is required so timing and the set can be adjusted as needed.
Capacity and Session Scheduling
This is not a typical high-volume, assembly-line, mini-session. Nor is it feasible to expect everyone to be instantly relaxed in front of the camera. Right now, I can comfortably offer 6 portrait sittings during a single-day event.
The sessions are arranged to feel comfortable for everyone:
Pre-Session: 5 minutes so I can establish a rapport and learn their personal preferences for the session
Session Length: 20-40 minutes of active photography per person
Proofing: 20-40 minutes per session, immediately following the session
Total time per participant: 60-90 minutes depending on how everything goes
If the community can provide a very secure space where equipment can be left overnight, I can offer two consecutive Senior Portrait Days and additional time for portrait sittings (up to ~10 per day depending on timing).
Scheduling for Print Deliveries
Final digital files are delivered within 7-14 days post-event.
Proof prints are ready 2-3 weeks post-session, depending on lab and shipping turnaround.
Any other printed products vary by type of product (labs usually have varying turnaround times for larger/more involved pieces). A delivery estimate will be given when the invoice is submitted for payment.
Payment online is preferred, but cash and check during the Portrait Day is fine. Any balances are paid upon delivery.
If a session is gifted, print ordering can be arranged so the gifter is invoiced and cost is never discussed with the recipient. This option will be discussed when the gifter is purchasing the session.
I offer a communal delivery session for all proof prints and products, with the option of two separate deliveries (one for proofs, the second for all other orders). Those dates need to be scheduled once I have delivery-date confirmation from the labs. Anyone who misses the delivery window can pick up their orders with staff.
Print costs: as per my studio policy, I do not place markup on printed products, including albums. Everything is produced at lab cost (covered by the participant). Participants are welcome to choose whatever they wish to have, as lab prices are very reasonable. I can offer style guidance and explain different options. I'll have paper samples available.
I've gathered a sampling of actual prices from the labs I recommend. Professional labs are quite reasonable, and I've chosen to use reputable labs who offer a wide range of archival-quality products and processes.
Participants are also welcome to print elsewhere. I include a print-release with each final image for this reason. They are free to choose what they wish to do with the digital files of their portraits.
Due to not profiting off marked-up printed products, there is no push for sales of any kind. There is no selling, only recommendations based on the personal tastes and needs of each participant.
Preparing for Senior Portrait Day
Portrait Day is designed to be comfortable and respectful. I enjoy working with seniors. Their frank attitudes and self-acceptance is refreshing.
While this portrait sitting isn't long enough to change their wardrobe, they can use accessories or layers to change looks. I encourage props/accessories to play with while posing (and have some fun things I'll bring with me, but obviously these won't be personal to the participants). I suggest props because it feels more natural to do something that sit and stare at the camera.
Standing shots are also possible, depending on the preferences and abilities of the person in front of me.
- Mobility aids and glasses are not a problem
- Certain hearing aids may need adjusted due to reflecting light
- Most health-related equipment is not a problem and can be worked around. It's part of their lives, and as such, is part of their personal portrait.
If the participants want a deeper experience—lifestyle portraits, a memorabilia session, or a personal-storytelling session—they can be discussed at any point.
These other sessions are scheduled separately and priced [at this time] based my expenses. If there’s enough interest, I can give a brief overview presentation of my other session offerings before Senior Portrait Day begins. If not, I won't. I'm not here to sell anything other than what's already been sold (the portrait session itself).
I can also provide a brief presentation on Senior Portrait Day itself, anytime prior to the event, should it seem useful to all; along with my tip guide and pet guide.
How to Host a Senior Portrait Day
To host a Portrait Day, the community typically provides:
- A private area or room large enough for my equipment and a few people
- A small table and chairs for handling check-in and digital proofing
- A large, study box for posing, or a comfortable-but-armless chair
- A sign-up method in the community itself
- A secure, stable Internet connection to assist me with taking payments and digital-proofing

Want to host a Senior Portrait Day?
Please share 2–3 preferred dates and the approximate number of interested participants so I can recommend the best schedule to allow for the most participation.
My goals are to build my portfolio with my preferred clientele (who I call [Real] Seniors) and develop connections in the community. I’m not here to upsell services, though I can certainly offer more. My aim for Senior Portrait Days are to give my subjects one gorgeous portrait I bet they didn’t realize was in them. It's extremely gratifying, as a professional, to have my work so well-received by the people who deserve my best efforts.
Not to mention, a portrait like this is an excellent addition to a Golden Anniversary celebration (or as a gift!).
